My son was having sleeping problems and his doctor recommended it to him. The instructions state to take medication at least 20 minutes before bedtime. You start to feel sleepy as soon as you take it. This led to some 'guesswork' as to where four droppers (as instructed by the labeling) were. He actually looks more relaxed. He has just started to initiate conversation. Melatonin affects individuals differently, so start with a very low dose like 300mcg, then adjust from there. As for long term use, there have been studies that have shown that if you develop tolerance, you just need to stop taking it for a few days. Liquid melatonin is the only way I can give it to my son as he cannot swallow tablets. I add it to his soy milk. He takes it without a problem. Autistic individuals have low levels of melatonin so supplementation makes a lot of sense. He has been on it for 3 months now, with nothing but positive results. We 1st thought it was by choice but after a long while thought maybe she actually had trouble falling asleep such as her father and sometimes myself. Both my husband and I take Melatonin in capsule form. We tried this for her and now she always falls asleep within 30 minutes max. It works fantastic! Liquid tastes good and is easy to give a half hour before bedtime.
